Opportunity North East
Opportunity North East (ONE) is the private sector catalyst for economic diversification and growth in north east Scotland, developing and delivering transformational projects in the region’s key sectors. Through ONE, the private sector shapes the region’s low-carbon economy, maximises business growth opportunities and creates high-skill, high-value jobs.
In life sciences, ONE develops, funds and delivers dedicated business support programmes, working with partners including the University of Aberdeen, Robert Gordon University and NHS Grampian. These include a pre-commercialisation programme, the ONE Life Sciences Accelerator, the ONE Life Sciences Network and the ONE Life Sciences Leadership Forum.
BioHub, led by ONE, is a transformational £40 million investment to make Aberdeen one of the most dynamic locations in the UK to create and grow life sciences businesses.
BioHub is currently half-way through its construction phase and scheduled to open in autumn 2022. The new-build facility will house up to 400 scientific entrepreneurs with the goal of doubling the number of life sciences companies in the region by 2027. It will be home to spinout, startup and scaling businesses bringing new drugs, treatments, therapies, technology and digital health solutions. It will provide laboratory, incubation and collaboration space, custom accommodation, specialist business growth programmes, and access to expert networks and investors.
BioHub is a flagship addition to Aberdeen’s Foresterhill Health Campus, one of Europe’s largest integrated clinical, research and teaching sites for life sciences and medicine.
ONE is the lead partner and a co-funder of BioHub, which has secured £20 million of capital funding jointly provided by the Scottish Government and UK Government via the Aberdeen City Region Deal. NHS Grampian and the University of Aberdeen are strategic delivery partners in BioHub.
